Yates field crude line coated internally, externally

Marathon Pipe Line Company recently completed construction of a 16-in pipeline coated internally and externally with thin film epoxy. The project, consisting of 6.3 miles of 16-in pipeline, connects the west side crude oil production of Marathon's Yates field to an orginating mainline pump station. The Yates field is located ca. 80 miles south of Midland adjacent to the town of Iraan, Texas. The internal coating was applied to combat internal pipe wall corrosion caused by the combination of several factors. The crude oil is processed through separators to remove the entrained gas and water prior to metering and injection into the pipeline. However, it is expected that trace amounts of water and gas will remain in the oil. The pipeline is designed to utilize the elevation difference of 180 ft. between its start and finish and operate as a gravity flow system. A 14-mil thickness of 3M Scotchkote 206-N was applied to both interior and exterior walls of the pipe by Reading and Bate's plant coating facility in Houston. The internal and external field joints also were coated with Scotchkote 206-N epoxy with equipment provided by Commercial Resins Company, Tulsa. Details of the coating process are given.
