Predicting proppant bridging improves fracture designs

Proppant transport, through perforations, perforation tunnels and into fractures via crosscut channels, presents special flow problems during hydraulic fracturing. Although frac treatments are routine today, knowledge is scarce concerning the behavior of proppants as they move from casing into the fracture. This paper describes proppant transport through perforations along with a procedure for predicting proppant behavior during frac jobs. These techniques can be used to effectively design and employ hydraulic fracs and to prevent screen-outs when proppant bridges off in perforations, tunnels or channels.
