Small noise in power system dynamics and its relation to security assessment

Conference ·

Goal of this work is to develop a security measure for power systems to supplement existing steady state and dynamic security measures. It is motivated by the observed phenomenon of voltage collapse. This work develops a security measure which relates to the size of the region of attraction for the power system's equilibrium point. A model with a small magnitude white noise disturbance is employed to identify an asymptotic estimate (in the small noise limit) of the expected time for trajectories of the stochastic system to exit the deterministic region of attraction. This estimate is related to a Lyapunov function for the deterministic dynamics, and it is shown that the expected exit time grows exponentially with the value of the Lyapunov function at the closest unstable equilibrium point.
