Letter concerning liquid-phase catalyst for Poelitz (for processing pitch) (in German)

Apparently Poelitz had had a supply of pitch to be hydrogenated and had wondered about which catalyst to use for it since they could no longer use the molybdenum catalyst. Dr. Pier described experiments run by Ludwigshafen about that question. The experiments had showed that a catalyst consisting of iron on carbonization coke could be effective under the conditions described, in which tar and tar residues were mixed with pitch. He suggested using a throughput of 0.5 kg/liter/hr and recycling of heavy oil in the ratio 1:0.25, in order to be able to keep the oven under control at the high temperatures necessary for breakdown of the solid components and asphalts. Dr. Pier suggested starting each run with a mixture just of the tar (from a gas generator) and tar oil residues, and then gradually adding the pitch to the starting mixture, up to a content of about 50% if desired and if the amounts of tar were reduced somewhat. Ludwigshafen had used the catalyst in the amount of 2% of the starting materials. Dr. Pier suggested that if there were more pitch than could be mixed with the amount of tar and residues available, the excess pitch could later be processed together with coal.
