The dewatering of coal concentrates between wet cleaning and carbonization is an important processing stage. Mechanical methods are among the most widely used; they include dewatering by filtration and by centrifuging. The second method brings about a significant reduction in particle size amounting to 22% in centrifuges with a discharge scroll and 14% in the type with vibration discharge. Comminution increases the proportion of slurry and flotation concentrate and raises the final moisture content of the charge. Thus, for each extra 1% of flotation concentrate in the charge its moisture content is increased by 0.15% without drying and 0.04% even with drying. The moisture content of coarse slurry and flotation concentrate can be brought down to 11.3 to 13.8% by thermal drying, but the extent to which this method is used in cleaning plants at the coking undertakings is still too small. The charge is usually brought down to the specified moisture content by a more intense mechanical dewatering of the coarse and fine concentrates and filtration of the slurry, for example, by using improved types of dewatering screens, filtration centrifuges, and vacuum filters. A review is presented of research into the dewatering performance of filtration centrifuges, with recommendations on performance evaluation.
