TVA does not need to be privatized. [Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA)]

Over the years, some arguments have been raised advocating the privatization of the Tennessee Valley Authority-the nation's largest public power producer. Most of the arguments, however, are based on three dubious theories that have managed to receive a fair share of publication space and thereby have earned some notice. The first of the pro-privatization theories is that TVA in its current status as a federal agency is severely inefficient, and it would function considerably better as an investor-owned utility company. The second theory is that US taxpayers would fare better if TVA were privatized, because it would eliminate the supposedly massive subsidization of the agency's power program by the nation's citizens. The third theory is that TVA's ratepayers are paying more than they should for power and would receive more competitive rates from a private sector utility. All three of these theories are invalid. This article refutes these theories and the argument for the privatization of the TVA.
