Heat capacity measurements from 150 mK to 1. 5 K on some CeSi/sub x/ metallic alloys

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6118630
A calorimeter is described which was designed to operate in the temperature range 150 mK to 1.5 K. The addenda was constructed with materials that have small heat capacities so that the heat capacity contribution of the addenda was much smaller than that of the sample being measured. A bellows type heat switch was used to cool the sample and a standard heat pulse measurement technique was used to obtain data. The heat capacities of two copper samples were measured in order to test the calorimeter. Deviation from the copper reference equation was observed below 0.45/sup 0/K. The heat capacities of CeSi/sub 1.850/ and CeSi/sub 1.855/ were measured in the temperature range 150 mK to 1.5 K to determine the nature of their magnetic state. Results indicated that both CeSi/sub 1.850/ and CeSi/sub 1.855/ are nonmagnetic down to 150 mK.
