Observation of new structure in the collective mode spectrum of zero sound in /sup 3/He-B

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. B: Condens. Matter; (United States)
The attenuation of zero sound in the range 4 to 165 cm/sup -1/ at 44--54 MHz has been measured in superfluid /sup 3/He-B at pressures of 1.36 and 2.44 bars and temperatures down to 0.72T/sub c/. New structure has been found in the temperature dependence of the acoustic attenuation in the vicinity of the pair-breaking cutoff which we interpret as due to the predicted J = 4/sup -/ and J = 0/sup +/ modes. The existence of the former mode depends on significant l>1 components of the pairing interaction.
