Attenuation of zero sound in /sup 3/He-B; observations of new structure close to the pair breaking edge

Conference · · AIP Conf. Proc.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6096881
The attenuation of zero sound in superfluid /sup 3/He-B has been measured for attenuations <170 cm/sup -1/ at pressures <3 bar. New structure has been found in the temperature dependence of the acoustic attenuation in the vicinity of the pair breaking cut-off. The magnetic field dependence of this structure has been investigated. Possible origins of the structure are discussed including its possible identification with the predicted J = 4/sup -/ mode, the existence of which depends on significant l > 1 components of the pairing interaction. 33 references, 6 figures.
