Agricultural growth and the ecological balance in Hainan

Journal Article · · Guangzhou Redai Dili; (United States)

This article discusses agricultural growth and the ecological balance on the island of Hainan, China. Topics considered include several problems of ecological balance in agricultural growth that need emphasis and consideration; the changes and ecological balance of Hainan's agricultural land use composition; and the present state and development trends of Hainan's different ecological types of land use composition. The prominent changes in Hainan's agricultural land use composition have been manifested mainly in the clearly increased use of land for tropical crops and farm crops and in the concomitant gradual decrease of forest land. Hainan has formed a unique pattern of tropical agricultural management for China and other areas. It is proposed that Hainan must establish a multilevel agricultural composition consisting mainly of tropical economic forests, utilize tropical hilly tableland and the natural resources of mountains, and expand tropical economic forests (e.g. rubber) and other forests. In this way, not only can Hainan's rubber dominated agriculture grow, but because of the function of trees in soil and water conservation, they will play an indispensable role in developing the plain areas' agricultural composition that consists mainly of cereal crops, beans, sugar cane, and others of which multiple crops can be grown. 11 tables.
