/sup 4/He D-state effects in the /sup 2/H(d,. gamma. ) /sup 4/He reaction

A discussion of tensor analyzing powers of the /sup 2/H(d,..gamma..) /sup 4/He reaction at low energy (E/sub d/<20 MeV), where the process is predominantly E2, is presented. The inclusion of the /sup 4/He D state generates transitions from the /sup 5/S/sub 2/, /sup 5/D/sub 2/, and /sup 5/G/sub 2/ initial states. It is shown that the tensor analyzing powers depend linearly on the D/S ratio rho of /sup 4/He for angles near (1/4)..pi.. and (3/4)..pi... Using scattering wave functions with phase shifts obtained from resonating group calculations good agreement with recent T/sub 20/ data at E/sub d/ = 9.7 MeV is obtained for -0.5
