Ignition system for internal combustion engine

Patent ·
OSTI ID:6101702

An ignition system for an internal combustion engine is described, comprising: means for generating an angle signal defining substantially constant first and second sections of an ignition cycle; means for integrating in one direction during one of the section of the ignition cycle and integrating in the other direction during the other section of the cycle; means for generating a coil-energization start signal in synchronism with a time point when the integration value of the integrating means reaches a predetermined valve during the first section; a power transistor connected to be turned on and off in response to the generation of the coil-energization start signal and the switching of the angle signal between its first and second sections; an ignition coil for generating a high voltage by turning on and off primary current thereof in response to the turning on and off of the power transistor; means for commanding the integrating means to integrate in one direction in the second section of a preceding ignition cycle and in the other direction of the first section of the next ignition cycle; means for turning on the power transistor; means for generating a reset pulse of a short duration for resetting the integration value of the integrating means to an initial value in synchronism with the start of the primary current in the ignition coil, and wherein the predetermined value used by the start-signal generator means is larger than the initial value.
