EPA's ground water protection strategy

The importance of ground water is discussed. Ground water serves as the drinking water source for 50% of the nations populations - 90% in rural areas. Many states are highly dependent on it for irrigation and for such industrial purposes as secondary recovery of oil and gas. The Environmental Protection Agencies ground water protection strategies are discussed. The appropriate roles of local, state, and the federal government in protecting the nation's ground water resource are discussed. The strategy recognizes states as having the principal role in ground water management.
