We show that the correlation between apparent ellipticity and surface brightness can be used to determine whether elliptical galaxies are predominantly oblate or prolate spheroids. If selection effects on the galaxy sample are not significant, then a comparison between the available data and Monte Carlo simulations strongly favors the oblate model.
