We have investigated the reactivity of aliphatic nitriles in the vapor-phase hydrogenation to primary amines. Rate measurements were carried out using a differential flow reaction at atmospheric pressure. The reaction products, which contained both primary amine and unreacted nitrile, were analyzed quantitatively by GLC equipped with a flame ionization detector. The rate of hydrogenation of aliphatic nitriles R-CN decreases as the number of carbon atoms in the alkyl substituent increases; the corresponding Taft sigma*-constants decrease in the same order.
