PLAYMAKER, a knowledge-based expert system, is a component of the eXpert eXplorer (XX) system, which has been developed at the University of South Carolina, to assist a geologist organizing field information, characterizing a hydrocarbon field, play, or prospect, and estimating hydrocarbon potential of a new prospect. PLAYMAKER consists of four main components: (1) a geological knowledge base - a system working knowledge expressed in rules with belief values, (2) MIDST (Mixed Inferencing Dempster-Shafer Tool) - an inference engine directing information to reasoning or interpretation, (3) a rule-editor - a rule builder for adding, deleting, and modifying rules, (4) a user interface - a work station for data input and consultation output. Seventy-five test cases were consulted from the three sedimentary basins - the US Gulf Coast, the southern California Borderland and Great Valley, and the Korean Gyeongsang Basins. The US Gulf Coast marine sedimentary sequence is one of the world's largest hydrocarbon basins. The Great Valley Basin contains a thick marine sedimentary sequence which filled a trench-associated convergent and transform boundary from the Early Cretaceous to Neocene, and contains enormous oil and gas reserves. The final basin considered is non-hydrocarbon Korean Gyeongsang Basin. The seventy-five consultation results for the sedimentary facies and structural styles were compared with those derived from the published data, and their compatibility with the experts' interpretations was considered. PLAYMAKER demonstrates to be an efficient tool in characterization of a hydrocarbon field, play, or prospect.
