Cross sections for the reactions /sup 243/Am(e, n)z/sup 242m/fAm and total fission cross sections for /sup 243/Am(e, F) (sigma/sub e/f+sigma/sub e/,/sub n/f+...) have been measured in the electron-energy interval E/sub e/ = 17.5--78 MeV (delayed and prompt electrofission). For a comparison we simultaneously measured the yields of delayed and prompt photofission in bombardment by bremsstrahlung with maximum energies in the same energy range (the reactions /sup 243/Am(..gamma.., n)/sup 242m/fAm) and /sup 243/Am(..gamma.., F)). The data obtained are discussed in the framework of the virtual-photon method in the DWBA. It is shown that the excitation of the isomer occurs primarily as the result of dipole absorption of virtual photons; the contribution of the quadrupole component, as in the case of prompt electrofission of /sup 243/Am, does not exceed 10%.
