Electronically conducting ceramics for high temperature oxidizing environments
This patent describes the composition of an oxidant electrode in the environment of a fuel cell consisting of a fuel electrode, the oxidant electrode, and an electrolyte containing an alkali metal carbonate mixture including lithium carbonate. The oxidant electrode consisting of the electronically-conductive lithium and the transition metal oxide selected from Li/sub 2/MnO/sub 3/ with magnesium dopant and LiFeO/sub 2/ with manganese dopant. The oxide has electrical conductivity as measured by a resistivity below about 100 ohm-cm., high temperature stability in the presence of molten alkali metal carbonate including lithium carbonate at a temperature in the order of 500-700/sup 0/C., and a crystalline structure incorporating the lithium and transition metals as well as the dopant.
