In an effort to learn more of the dynamics of directly produced leptons in hadronic reactions, direct dimuon production was studied in ..pi../sup -/ proton interactions at 15.0 GeV/c beam momentum. A collaboration among Brandeis University, the University of Cincinnati, and Syracuse University performed the experiment at Brookhaven National Laboratory's Multi-Particle Spectrometer facility, serviced by the AGS high energy unseparated beam. Previous experiments of this type have indicated that a residual signal exists in the 400 to 600 MeV/c/sup 2/ range of the dimuon mass spectrum after the effect of the rho, omega, and the zeta mesons have been accounted for. This experiment investigates the reaction ..pi../sup -/p ..-->.. ..mu../sup +/..mu../sup -/..pi../sup + -/ + anything, allowing the detection of the tensor mesons A/sup 0//sub 2/ and f if they decay as A/sup 0//sub 2/ or f ..-->.. ..mu../sup +/..mu../sup -/rho/sup 0/ ..-->.. ..mu../sup +/..mu../sup -/..pi../sup +/..pi../sup -/. The tensor mesons have been suggested as a source of the anomalous signal. The experimental results show an enhancement at the rho mass in the dimuon mass spectrum with the low mass region suppressed. The above mentioned tensor meson decays are not observed. The primary channel contributing to the rho appears to be ..pi../sup -/p ..-->.. rho/sup 0/..delta../sup 0/(1232) + pions, where p/sup 0/ ..-->.. ..mu../sup +/..mu../sup -/ and ..delta../sup 0/(1232) ..-->.. p..pi../sup -/.
