Effect of reflection in the optical-potential absorption cross section

It is shown that as the imaginary part of the optical potential increases, the absorption (reaction) cross section saturates and then decreases due to the effect of reflection. The reflection effect in the absorption cross section is calculated for a strongly absorbing spherical square-well potential, and the effect is shown to reduce to Fresnel reflection from the surface of the potential. In the case where the Coulomb barrier is considerably less than the energy of the incident particles, the Coulomb interaction is also taken into account. An upper estimate of the reflection effect is given for nuclear optical potentials with specific values of the parameters.
