REACTION CROSS SECTIONS AND THE SHAPE OF THE IMAGINARY PART OF THE OPTICAL POTENTIAL
The dependence of the neutron and proton reaction cross sections on the shape of the imaginary part of the optical potential was investigated for energies less than about 10 Mev to determine the extent to which different shapes could be discriminated from a knowledge of reaction cross sections. At incident energies (typified by 4 Mev) for which the absorption is moderately strong, little information can be obtained about the shape, unless this is extreme, from either the neutron or proton reaction cross sections separately, and little more if these are considered together. At higher energies (typified by 8 Mev) for which the absorption is strong, information could be obtained about the surface region of the imaginary part of the potential insofar as some effective extension of this is concerned.
