Observation of UF/sup -//sub 6/ in Xe matrices

Infrared spectra of UF/sub 6/ isolated in water-doped xenon matrices exhibit a new absorption after UV photolysis. The absorption is attributed to UF/sup -//sub 6/ with a self-trapped hole as the counterion. The species is not produced when UF/sub 6/ in pure xenon matrices is irradiated. Because direct participation of water is not observed, it is proposed that the water impurity affects the photoprocesses occurring in pure xenon.
