The sedimentary geometries produced during the infilling of a two-dimensional basin from both sides by clastic sediment and in-situ carbonate growth are tracked by an interactive computer simulation (SEDBSN). The simulation has been implemented in C on an Apollo DN3000 work station using X windows so output is displayed on a screen. The geometries of clastic and carbonate sediments respond to the depositional processes including tectonic movement, eustasy, and sedimentation. Alluvial wedge, coastal plain, and basin slope and floor, and sediment bypass and erosion are modeled for clastics. Carbonate progradation, including downslope aprons, keep up, catch up, back step, drown facies, and hardgrounds are modeled for carbonates. Extensional vertical faulting of the basin, sediment compaction, and isostatic response to sediment loading are also handled. The entire process has been made as user-dependent as possible, with the user providing such information as the initial basin configuration, amount and source direction of clastic sediment, and the growth rates of carbonates as a function of water depth and other factors.
