The excess of US electrical generating capacity which has existed for the past 15 years is coming to an end as we enter the 1990's and 100--200 GWe of new capacity will be needed by the year 2000. Environmental and energy security issues associated with fossil fuels are kindling renewed interest in the nuclear option. This paper describes GE's advanced BWR programs aimed at providing a new generation of nuclear plants to provide safe, clean economical electricity to the world's utilities in the 1990's and beyond. The Advanced Boiling Water Reactor (ABWR) is being developed by an international team of BWR manufacturers. Major objectives of the ABWR program are design simplification; improved safety and reliability; reduced construction, fuel and operating costs; improved maneuverability; and reduced occupational exposure and radwaste.
