The nuclear option is becoming increasingly important as the need for new baseload capacity and the environmental impact of burning fossil fuels becomes more evident. Advanced Light Water Reactor nuclear plants which are pre-licensed and standardized are key to make nuclear energy an attractive option. GE Nuclear Energy has developed two new advanced and simplified BWR designs aimed at making available a new generation of nuclear plants to provide safe, clean, economical electricity to the world`s utilities in the 1990s and beyond. The 1300 MWe Advanced BWR (ABWR) has been developed and is under construction in Japan under a cooperative program involving the Tokyo Electric Power Company, GE, Hitachi and Toshiba. Commercial operation of the two ABWRs under construction at the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa site is scheduled for 1996 followed by the second unit in 1997. The ABWR is also the lead plant scheduled to receive US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) approval as the first certified US standard plant. The ABWR is scheduled to receive Final design approval (FDA) in 1992. In addition to the ABWR, GE is developing the 600 MWs Simplified BWR (SBWR). Work on the SBWR began in the early 1980`s. The SBWR was selected by the US Department of Energy (DOE) and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) for development and certification with the US NRC by 1995. The SBWR employs natural circulation and the use of passive safety features. The SBWR is largely based on proven ABWR technology; however, extensive test and development of key features unique to the SBWR are completed or underway.
