Plenty of reefs still outside rainbow

At a time when most of the oil exploration activity is centered on the expensive Rainbow Lake area of Northwestern Alberta, the change of finding large D-3 reef oil fields in readily accessible areas in central Alberta presents a tremendous opportunity for small independents. A recent Devonian Leduc D-3 reef oil discovery near Edmonton in Central Alberta represents a significant breakthrough in reef exploration. The locations of the discovery well and all subsequent development wells were made solely on the basis of detailed stratigraphic studies. Seismic work by numerous oil companies during the last 17 yr failed to detect this pinnacle reef. At the time of prospect delineation, 7 Devonian offreef tests and 3 shallow Cretaceous tests provided the subsurface control within 1/2 mile of the prospect. Exploratory and development drilling resulted in 6 flowing pinnacle reef oil wells in 40-acre spacing, 2 platform oil wells on pump, and 5 dry holes. The pinnacle-reef oil pool embraces 240 acres. The maximum net oil pay zone is 258 ft and the average net pay thickness is 158 ft. The estimated reserves for the new pool are set at 16,700,000 bbl of stock-tank oil in place by the Alberta Oil and Gas Conservation Board. Primary recoverable oil is calculated at 10,020,000 bbl.
