Exploration for Silurian reefs in Michigan

The lower peninsula of Michigan is encircled by a massive reef which reaches a maximum thickness of 610 ft. Pinnacle reefs occur on structural platforms or just off the steep face of the massive reef in nonplatform areas. Pinnacles in front of the reef occur within 15 miles of the foot of the steep face. The highest pinnacle discovered to date is E. Pullman on the Allegan Platform with a total thickness of 705 ft. Although thousands of wells have been drilled through the massive reef in Michigan, only one subcommercial oil well has resulted (1972 production was 283 bbl). To date, no pinnacle reefs have been found in the central basinal facies. All pinnacle reef production has been on structural platforms or in the 15-mile wide belt in front of the steep face of the massive reef.
