A method of recovering oil from an underground reservoir includes the following steps: (1) oxidizing the reservoir materials within the reservoir in the presence of an oxidizing fluid introduced into it through an injection well, with the oxidizing fluid containing at least 66% by volume of oxygen to produce a gaseous phase whose major portion is carbon dioxide, and which is miscible with the oil in the reservoir at reservoir conditions of temperature and pressure; (2) terminating the oxidizing of the reservoir materials when a predetermined quantity of the gaseous phase has been produced within the reservoir; (3) introducing into the reservoir through the injection well the driving fluid which is miscible with the gaseous phase and forcing the driving fluid, the gaseous phase, and the oil through the reservoir toward a production well; and (4) producing the oil from the reservoir through a production well.
