Recent development of optical pumping type polarized ion source at KEK

An optical pumping type polarized ion source has been developed at KEK. The authors have constructed a 6.5 GHz ECR ion source to examine the characteristics and performance of the ECR ion source. It was found that this source was very suitable for an optical pumping type polarized ion source. The authors are now developing a 16.5 GHz ECR ion source and constructing a new optical pumping type polarized ion source using this ECR ion source. In a preliminary experiment, a polarized H/sup -/ ion beam of 20 approx. 25 ..mu..A has been obtained. 12 references, 3 figures.
