Optically pumped polarized H/sup -/ ion source at KEK

An optically pumped polarized H/sup -/ ion source which uses an electron pick-up reaction of low energy H/sup T/ ion from optically pumped sodium atoms has been developed for the acceleration of a polarized proton beam in the 12 GeV synchrotron at KEK. In this polarized ion source, a 16.5 GHz ECR ion source is used as a H/sup +/ ion source. In a preliminary experiment, we have obtained about 10approx.25 ..mu..A H ion beam of 83 +- 27approx.39 +- 21% polarization.
