Ethanol production from agricultural cellulosic feedstocks

Conference ·
OSTI ID:6076519

A two-stage acid hydrolysis process for the production of ethanol from corn stover is described. The process uses concentrated sulfuric acid and the following steps: grinding, hemicellulose hydrolysis, concentrated acid prehydrolysis treatment, acid concentration by drying, cellulose hydrolysis, and lignin and sugar separation and recovery. Acid recycle is employed to reduce acid consumption. A mixed sugar product with concentrations over 20% can be produced.
