Review of amorphous silicon solar cell technology in Japan

Conference · · Conf. Rec. IEEE Photovoltaic Spec. Conf.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6075724
Recent progress in the field of amorphous silicon solar cells and their technologies in Japan are reviewed. Firstly, some unique advantages of amorphous silicon as a low cost solar cell material are pointed out in views of basic physics and applicational technologies. Secondly, general aspect of the new deposition trials related to high deposition rate and resulting new furnaces are introduced. Some new approaches to improve photovoltaic performances utilizing the optical and carrier confinement effects with new amorphous materials such as amorphous SiC, SiGe and microcrystalline Si are demonstrated. In the final part, recent feature of the industrializations of a-Si solar cells in Japan are overviewed, and the current state of the art in the cell performances are summarized and discussed.
