Sweden's DH utilities add heat pump capacity

Swedish district heating utilities have ordered or installed more than 475 MW of industrial heat pump capacity over the past three years to take advantage of low-cost hydroelectric and nuclear base load electric power, which together supply nearly 90% of the country's base load electric power. Besides economic advantages, the heat pumps provide environmental benefits by matching the source water temperature with that of the natural water body into which it is discharged and by replacing coal- or oil-fired boiler plants.
