Qualification test programs conducted in the past decade have established qualified lives for much Class 1E equipment used in nuclear power plants. This designated life is not the equipment's end-of-life but is simply a life selected and conservatively simulated prior to subjecting the equipment to its design basis event. The qualified life for much of the Class 1E equipment can be extended with a program of monitoring, meaningful maintenance and surveillance techniques and documentation. The regulatory basis, the essential ingredients, and program strategies are discussed for both harsh and mild environment Class 1E equipment.
