Diurnal and semi-diurnal temperature variability of the middle atmosphere, as observed by ISAMS

This paper presents measurements of diurnal and semi-diurnal temperature variations in the middle atmosphere (15-80km), made with the improved stratospheric and mesospheric sounder (ISAMS) instrument on the upper atmosphere research satellite (UARS). This satellite has the advantage for these measurements in that its orbit precesses with respect to the earth sun axis by roughly 5[degrees] per day, and therefore allows the observation of atmospheric effects throughout the full diurnal cycle. These temperature variations are interpreted as westward migrating tides in the middle atmosphere.
