This paper reports on the use of the improved stratospheric and mesospheric sounder (ISAMS) on the upper atmosphere research satellite to provide unprecedented information on the global evolution of the aerosol cloud generated as a result of the Mt Pinatubo eruption. This satellite was launched roughly three months after the eruption, and the ISAMS instrument uses an infrared channel near 12.1 [mu]m to monitor the stratospheric aerosol. The instrument has shown the maximum absorption region shift toward the equator, has seen the cloud disperse toward the poles, and vertically, with more rapid dispersal in the southern hemisphere, and has observed the gradual decrease in height, and total amount of suspended aerosol, through July 1992.
