Charge transfer from molecular hydrogen to stored O/sup 2 +/ and O/sup 3 +/ ions

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. A; (United States)
The rate coefficients for charge transfer from H/sub 2/ moleculesto O/sup 2 +/ and O/sup 3 +/ ions have been measured at eVenergies using an ion-storage technique. A single rate coefficient/ital k/(O/sup 3 +/,H/sub 2/)=(7.15+-0.15)/times/10/sup /minus/9/cm/sup 3//s characterizes the O/sup 3 +/,H/sub 2/interaction, but the attenuation of the stored O/sup 2 +/-ion numberdue to charge transfer in a mixture of O/sub 2/ and H/sub 2/gases exhibited a double time constant. Analysis employing the time dependenceof the O/sup 2 +/-ion metastable-level mean lives resulted in thecharge-transfer rate coefficients/ital k/(O/sup 2 +/(/sup 3/P),H/sub 2/)=(1.71+-0.15)/times/10/sup /minus/9/cm/sup 3//s and/ital k/(O/sup 2 +/(/sup 1/D),H/sub 2/)=(9.6+-0.6)/times/10/sup /minus/9/ cm/sup 3//s.The mean energy of the O/sup 2 +/ ions was 1.25(0.5) eV, while theO/sup 3 +/ ions were at 2.15(0.5) eV. The relationships to electroncapture from H and from O/sub 2/ by these ions are discussed.
