A preview of the Harvard Business School Energy Project's new book, Energy Future, includes an interview with two of the seven authors and a summary of the book's analysis of the hard facts and difficult choices facing the country. The government is given the role of managing a transition to a balanced system of energy sources. Increased oil imports or a combination of solar energy and conservation are found to be the only major alternatives, the authors favoring the latter choice. Solar energy - including hydroelectric power, biomass, and other direct and indirect uses - is suggested as a source of 20% of the energy supply by the end of the century. A distortion-free market is suggested as the best way to encourage conservation. A more generous system of subsidies, loans, and tax credits is recommended, one that would be based on a national life cycle cost approach and aimed at reducing oil imports.
