Air pollution has become a serious problem for the grape industry in New York's Great Lakes region. Ozone is discussed in relation to crop damage. There are several by-products of coal-combustion and steel manufacture that may cause serious plant injury. They include: sulfur dioxide, hydrogen fluoride, nitrous oxide, and several of the heavy metals, such as arsenic, mercury, and lead. A leaf injury, called Brown Leaf, has been identified as oxidant stipple, which is caused by excessive ozone. It is evident that excessive soil moisture results in more oxidant stipple. In 1977, an expanded research effort has been undertaken to determine the effects of other air pollutants, such as sulfur dioxide.
