Cleaning coal slurries in column-type flotation machines

The trials showed that under the conditions obtaining at the Magnitogorsk cleaning plant the use of a flotation column for the main stage and a mechanical flotation machine for recleaning the column tailings would substantially lower the ash of the concentrate (by 1.1%) at an increased yield (by 1.9%). The advantages of the flotation column include simple construction and dependability. Used in the way suggested, it should reduce the floorspace requirement by 50 to 70% overall, including 30 to 40% for space actually occupied by machinery. The flotation column consumes more reagents than the mechanical type of machine. The consumption could however be reduced by using more efficient apparatus to prepare the pulp for flotation. The concentrate from the flotation column contains less air than that from mechanical flotation machines; the solids contents are approximately equal. On the whole, the trials indicated that major improvements in flotation section performance can be attained by combining flotation columns for the main stage with mechanical flotation machines to reclean the column tailings. A flotation column is still in constant use at the Magnitogorsk cleaning plant. Further work to improve the cleaning of coal slurries by using flotation columns should be directed towards increasing their throughput, developing more wear-resisting dispersers and exploring ways of reducing the consumption of flotation reagents by using more efficient apparatus to prepare the pulp for flotation.
