The dehydrochlorination of 3,4-dichloro-1-butene (3,4-DCB-1) by aqueous solutions of M/sup +/ hydroxides has been studied in the presence of low-molecular-weight alcohols and a quarternary ammonium salt of catamine AB. The effect of the nature of the alcohol and of the alkali metal hydroxide on the efficiency of dehydrochlorination is discussed. The data obtained herein for the relative reactivities of M/sup +/ hydroxides toward dehydrochlorination in aqueous alcohol solutions, as well as the calculations, verify that the dehydrochlorinating agent in these systems is the hydroxide ion.
