The aqueous base (hydroxide) dehydrochlorination of halogen-substituted hydrocarbons in the presence of phase transfer catalysts is widely used for the preparation of olefins and dienes. In this paper the aqueous hydroxide dehydrochlorination of 3,4-dichloro-1-butene (3,4-DCB-1) has been studied in the presence of a phase transfer catalyst, catanol. The effect of sodium hydroxide concentration on the nature of the limiting step in this dehydrochlorination reaction has been examined.
