Oil and gas exploration in Alabama in 1970

Book ·
OSTI ID:6048591
Alabama became an oil producing state in 1944 with the discovery of the Gilbertown field in Choctaw County, Alabama. Three hundred and fifty oil and gas tests wells had been drilled in the state prior to 1944 without commercial success. Five new oil fields had been discovered in Alabama by 1967. Oil and gas exploration became more intensified in April 1967, after the discovery of oil in the Toxey field. This discovery gave Alabama its first oil production from the Smackover Formation of Jurassic age. Since 1967, there have been 11 new discoveries of oil trapped in the subsurface formations of Alabama. Alabama now has 17 oil- and gas-producing fields. There were 43 oil test wells completed in Alabama in 1970, of which 32 were wildcats and 11 were field development wells. Of the 32 wildcat wells, 5 resulted in new discoveries. Seismic, leasing, and drilling activities were quite extensive throughout SW. Alabama in 1970 and the outlook for future oil discoveries is very bright.
