Method for determining the partial inelasticity coefficient in hadron-nucleus interactions

A method is proposed for determining the partial inelasticity coefficient K0 in hadron-nucleus interactions studied in cosmic rays. The method ensures a systematic error which is considerably smaller than that in the available data. The example of simulated nuclear-electromagnetic cascades generated by pions and protons in the iron absorber of an ionization calorimeter is used to show that this technique permits the determination of with an error of < or approx. =3% when the uncertainty in the measured hadron energy is no more than 10%.
