The kinetics of oxidative acetoxylation of propylene by oxygen in acetic acid with the formation of propylene glycol monoacetate, catalyzed by Pd(II) and nitrate ions were studied in the 50-85/degree/C region with different NO/sub 3//sup -/:Pd(II) and propylene:oxygen ratios. The orders of the reaction with respect to propylene and Pd(II) were equal to one. The observed activation energy of the reaction was 68.3 kJ/mole. The kinetic data obtained are in agreement with the mechanism of the reaction which includes intermediate formation of a nitrite-palladium complex with propylene.
