Gasdynamical behavior of diagonal type MHD generator linked to inverter transmission system

Conference · · AIAA J.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6046833
The interactions between a diagonal-type MHD generator and a transmission system linked by line-commutated inverters are numerically simulated. The gasdynamical performances in the MHD duct are simulated over a wide range of the phase-control angle of the line-commutated inverter for nominal conditions of the MHD generator. These performances are found to be stabler at steady operation. Analysis of four kinds of faults showed that they cause shorting of inverters and large effects in the MHD generator, including sudden changes in gasdynamical quantities and gasdynamical fluctuations. The fault-caused acceleration of gas velocity may damage downstream systems; thus, it is advisable to shut down the generator dc load current. 8 references.
