The flotation activity of the reagent mixture depends on the group chemical composition of both frothing and collecting agents. The best results were obtained using oxides and 1,3-dioxane derivatives as frother in conjunction with collectors containing unsaturated and aromatic hydrocarbons. Flotability of low rank coal can be improved by the use of reagents in which aromatic and unsaturated compounds with double bonds predominate, such as an absorbent or a light oil. The introduction of an epichlorhydrin modifier intensifies the flotation action: this is due to the formation of polar chemical compounds or longer carbon radical complexes. The modifier tends to become adsorbed on the surface of the particles where it alters the adsorption and the bond strength of the reagents.
