Investigations of formed coke production equipment were carried out at the Khar'kov experimental coking plant. The results obtained confirmed the necessity for special tests on the fire and explosion safety of plants operating new technical processes. On the basis of the characteristics of the feed coals and the products of their thermal treatment to produce formed metallurgical coke on a pilot-plant scale, it should be possible to classify zones according to their degree of hazard with respect to explosions and fires. This should then be taken into consideration when planning new plant.
