Study of the E(1420) in /bar p/p annihilation at rest in H/sub 2/ gas

Conference · · AIP Conf. Proc.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6040135
We have observed the E meson produced in /bar p/p annihilation at rest (/bar p/p /r arrow/ ..pi../sup +/..pi..E /r arrow/ K/sup +//bar K//sup 0/..pi../minus/, K/sup /minus//K/sup 0//pi+/) in a H/sub 2/ gas target at NTP. The mass and width are M=1413+-8 MeV and GAMMA=62+-16 MeV. There is strong evidence (3sigma) for the production of the f/sub 1/(1285) in the same final state. The partial-wave analysis of the E decay Dalitz plot gives no preference for the spin-parity assignments 0/sup /minus/+/ or 1/sup + +/. The absolute branching ratio for (60+-10%) P wave annihlation is (3+-0.9) /center dot/ 10/sup /minus/4/, compared to (7.12m*0.7 /center dot/ 10/sup /minus/4/) in liquid H/sub 2/, suggesting that ..pi pi..E production is strongly suppressed in the P-wave. This result supports the 0/sup /minus// spin-parity assignment for the E meson.
