Tribological studies on high speed steel cutting tools: Final report
Carbide and nitride coatings of Ti, Zr and Hf were prepared using the Activated Reactive Evaporation process. The effect of deposition conditions on structure and properties of these coatings was evaluated. Optimum deposition conditions to obtain high values of microhardness in the coatings were established. High-speed steel cutting tools were coated under the respective optimum conditions and were tested for cutting performance. Results indicated that the coated inserts performed significantly better than uncoated inserts. ZrN coated inserts showed the best performance. Preliminary work was also carried out to synthesize (TiAl)N and (TiAl)C coatings. Coatings in the composition range (Ti/Al) between 80:20 to 30:70 were prepared. X-ray diffraction studies on the (TiAl)N coatings showed major peaks corresponding to TiN and very small peaks corresponding to AlN phase. Similarly (TiC) was found to be a major phase in (TiAl)C coatings. The microhardness of the coatings varied depending on their composition. Lower values observed for the microhardness of these coatings are believed to be due to the very small thickness of the coatings, (approx.1 ..mu..m) for a 50 g load used in the hardness measurements.
